Our History

Arcadea has a proud history of promoting disability arts and equality in the North East of England. With events such as the Mimosa Festival, that brought national and international disabled artists to some of the region's major venues, the lecture series that reflected on new concepts of disability, and numerous consultancies, cabarets, performances, exhibitions and newsletters have all contributed, in no small part, to making the arts of the region a better place for disabled people.

In September 2011, with the launch of the HUB, Arcadea began a new chapter in its history of working to create positive change. With a new staff team Arcadea began to build a way of delivering our mission in ways that would both open our organisation to new challenges and possibilities as well as creating core financial sustainability.

In December 2014 the ICEbox was launched which allowed Arcadea to further broaden its focus to include disabled young people.
By working with young disabled people, Arcadea seeks in partnership to develop and nurture a new generation of artists and audiences for our arts and culture.

The organisation has moved from an office based operating environment to running a small suite of studios, that can accommodate a broad range of cultural activity and art forms.

In a short time, it has established a robust and enthusiastic board and staff team of artists, managers and care workers, whose specialisms combine to produce an offer that is on a par with any to be had from any of the mainstream cultural organisations in the city or region.

We now have a vibrant organisation that has focused its mission on the needs of learning disabled people, and delivers an array of exciting projects and work.
