Giant Leap
Giant Leap is a three year comprehensive programme of community participation, training, volunteering and employment / enterprise initiatives which will improve the status of Disabled people, support capacity building within the Disability Community and support the sustainable involvement of Disabled people in society on an equal level.
The programme will improve Disabled people’s equal involvement in community, social and cultural life. We will present and deliver work which promotes social change, develops Disabled peoples skills, and also improves understanding of Disabled people’s experiences so that we are valued and recognised as equal citizens.
Giant Leap will provide three strands of activities aimed at Disabled people at different stages and with different experiences:
1. To provide introductory level participatory workshops and courses to encourage isolated Disabled people to get involved in their communities, to forge links with other Disabled people, to engage in social networking and to consider taking an active role in community activity;
2. To provide one to one professional development planning opportunities, a mentoring programme and training courses to Disabled people who are looking towards work;
3. To provide advanced level support to Disability groups and Disabled individuals who are setting up enterprises – either as self-employed people or as groups with formal structures. We will provide training, information and advice, and signpost on to other sources of support in the region. The work will be delivered by Disabled professionals in safe spaces who will provide relevant skills in ways that are meaningful and sensitive to Disabled people.
Giant Leap aims to reach have contact with in excess of 42,000 Disabled people over its three year programme. We are uniquely placed and skilled to deliver this work and have based it on extensive consultation, research and our own previous successful delivery. The project will certainly have wider social impact as demonstrated in other recent programmes.
